This piece was the first I created for this collection. When designing it I wanted to challenge myself to use only hardwoods and to come up with a way to add dimension to the sky using only a single piece of walnut.

The colors you see in the mountains are natural pieces of ash, mahogany, purple heart, and poplar. The background mountains are composed of textured steel and the sky was hand carved into walnut using an angle grinder and endless hours of sanding/polishing.

For this collection each piece ties into the theme of both the physical and mental mountains we climb throughout life. That is why I chose to give it the name "Ascent". If I've learned anything from countless hiking adventures and life in general, while reaching the summit or achieving our goals feels amazing; the journey and climb along the way is where the true joy and lessons lie.
