"Denali"

I’ve been lucky enough to see Mount Denali from afar (near Talkeetna) but certainly plan to travel back to Alaska someday to get a closer look. Even from that distance, it didn't feel like a normal mountain. It is massive and self-contained, higher and more dominant than anything around it.

I wanted to capture that sense of scale and isolation here with the wide tundra in the foreground, the layered foothills, and the snow covered peaks taking over most of the skyline. As one of the best and most epic places to see the Northern Lights, I had to pay homage to that as well. The "small" grizzly bear crossing through the foreground puts everything into perspective, displaying the vastness of this truly wild place. Each section in this three dimensional layered piece was cut, shaped, and poured by hand to bring out that depth and contrast.

I don’t make many like this. If you’ve seen Denali in person, even from a distance, you know how it sticks with you. If it’s still on your list, this is the kind of piece that keeps that pull alive.
